Additional Details:
| The present buildings were designed by Sir Charles Barry. The foundation stone was laid in 1840 and Queen Victoria conducted the formal opening in 1852. The Clock Tower is 316 feet high. The hour bell of the present clock was called 'Big Ben' after Sir Benjamin Hall, when the clock was installed in 1858. A flag flies all day, and at night when the House is sitting, a light is kept burning. |
