| This magnificent castle stands on high ground behind the River Nore at the south eastern end of the city. Erected in the thirteenth century in place of an earlier mote fortress built by Strongbow. Originally the chief seat of the Butler family, Earls and Dukes of Ormonde. Remains today the property of the Marquis of Ormonde. Kilkenny is the venue for an Annual Beer and Holiday Festival. |
