The Dream by Detaille - French Military Painting
Additional Details:
| Original painting by Detaille, the well-known French artist, hangs in the Louvre in Paris. Detaille was one of France's greatest military painters. He painted a great many pictures of the French wars on the Peninsular and again of the French Revolution. This picture represents the soldiers' dream. The soldiers are sleeping on their arms in line of battle at the close of a hard engagement, ready at any moment to spring to arms, and above them in the clouds is the army rushing on to victory, which is supposed to be the dream of many of the soldiers. This is one of Detaille's best paintings. |
