The epitaph details John Newton's life, stating he was once an 'infidel and libertine' and 'servant of slaves in Africa', who was 'preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith'. It notes he ministered near 16 years as curate and vicar of Olney in Bucks, and 28 years as rector of united parishes. He married Mary Catlett on February 1, 1750. The epitaph was written by Newton himself. He died on December 21, 1807, aged 82, and his remains are in the vault beneath the church.
