ON MONTEREY PENINSULA,
there are three organized communities, Monterey.
Pacific Grove and Carmel. In addition to these
there is the Hotel del Monte and their properties,
Monterey is one of the most picturesque of Ameri-
can cities. It is known as the city of three flags :
and the cradle of California's history and romance.
The American flag was first raised in July 1846—
making this U. S. possession and in Sept. 1849
the first state capitol was located here.
Pacific Grove is a beautiful city of homes, on the
northern top of the peninsula. Carmel is a pic-
turesque town located in a dense pine forest with
a beautiful bay frontage and a mountainous back-
ground. This quaint village has become nationally
known as an artists colony.
