Additional Details:
Gay Head Light House was considered one of the ten most important light houses on the Eastern Seaboard. The original Fresnel Lens was installed in 1856. Whale oil, incandescent oil vapor mantle device and finally electricity in 1951, have supplied the power behind the light. The original lens of 1008 prisms and the apparatus for revolving it were given to The Dukes County Historical Society and is now housed in a tower on The Society's grounds in Edgartown.
