The Egyptian Obelisk, known as "Cleopatra's Needle," in Central Park, was presented to New York by Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, in 1877. Made of granite, it stands 69 feet high and weighs 230 tons. It was transported across the seas at the expense of the late Wm. H. Vanderbilt. Erected 3,500 years ago by King Thothmes III, it bears hieroglyphic titles of Thothmes and Rameses II, likely familiar to Moses and the Israelites in bondage in Egypt.
