Black rock walls of weathered rhyolite rise up above the Madison River in the volcanically formed valley. The Madison is world renowned for its excellent fishing. The Lewis and Clark Expedition named this river in honor of the U.S. President, James Madison, who was in office during their expedition in 1805.
