Independence Rock, known as 'The Great Record of the Desert,' bears names and dates carved by early emigrants on the Oregon and Utah trails from 1840-1869. Father De Smet named it in 1841. The first Masonic Lodge in Wyoming was held here in 1863. The rock is igneous, composed of red and white feldspar and mica, with glacial marks visible on its surface.
