Wyoming Cheyenne Sign Home of Frontier Days
Additional Details:
| The capital of Wyoming was named for the mighty Cheyenne Indians who once roamed this area. In 1867 General Dodge laid out the townsite for the Union Pacific Railroad. Fort D.A. Russell, now F.E. Warren AFB, the home of the Atlas and Minuteman missiles, was built to protect the construction workers from Indians. Among the many people who have trod Cheyenne's streets have been presidents, generals, Indians, gamblers, titled foreigners, cowboys, bullwhackers, gunmen. It was the starting point of the famous Cheyenne-Black Hills stage line and was once the headquarters for the richest cattle barons in the world. Today it is a proud, thriving city famous for Frontier Days, held annually since 1897. |
