Chalmette National Cemetery is the oldest below ground cemetery in the New Orleans area. Established in 1864 as a repository for Union troops it became the final resting place of 12,000 soldiers from the Civil War. The 17½ acre cemetery now contains 15,300 veterans representing every American war except the Revolution and the Korean Conflict.
