Luther Monument Commemorating Diet of Worms Appearance

| The monument commemorates Luther's appearance before the Diet of Worms in 1521, when he refused to recant his doctrines unless convinced by the word of God that they were false. It was designed by Ernst Rietschel in 1856 and its construction took 12 years. The central statue is 11 feet high and each of those on the corners 9 feet. The cost of construction was about $85,000. |
