Additional Details:
A panoramic view of Lee Vining Canyon, named for Leroy Vining who established a sawmill here in 1863 to supply lumber to the Aurora mining camp. This area is part of the Tioga Pass, which is the highest pass in California, reaching 9,941 feet. The Tioga Pass area is known for its numerous lakes at the top of the pass. The name 'Tioga' is of Iroquois Indian origin, meaning 'Where it forks,' and was applied to various towns, rivers, and features in Pennsylvania, New York, and this area by eastern mine owners familiar with the name.
