The fabulous Spruce Goose, the largest plane ever built: wingspan, 320 feet; length, over 218 feet; tailspan, 113.5 feet; vertical tail height, 49.5 feet; gross weight, 400,000 lbs; eight Pratt & Whitney 3,000 hp R-4360 radial reciprocating engines; eight 4-bladed Hamilton-Standard propellers over 17 feet in diameter. The mammoth seaplane flew only once, on November 2, 1947. The Spruce Goose is now on display under the biggest clearspan aluminum dome in the world, located next to the Queen Mary.
