The fabulous Spruce Goose, the largest plane ever built: wingspan, 320 feet; length, over 218 feet; tailspan, 113.5 feet; vertical tail height, 49.5 feet; gross weight, 400,000 lbs; eight Pratt & Whitney 3,000 hp R-4360 radial reciprocating engines; eight 4-bladed Hamilton-Standard propellers over 17 feet in diameter. The mammoth seaplane flew only once, on November 2, 1947. The Spruce Goose is now on display under the biggest clear-span aluminum dome in the world, located next to the Queen Mary.
