Events include the tree's growth beginning in 1148 A.D., a fire in 1341, Magna Carta in 1215, Columbus discovering America in 1492, Drake landing in California in 1579, Pilgrims landing in 1620, Declaration of Independence in 1776, Humboldt Bay discovered in 1849, and the Save the Redwoods League founded in 1919. The tree, located near Jordan Creek at the north end of the 'Avenue of the Giants', was 839 years old when it fell in 1987, was 300 feet tall, had an average base diameter of 9 feet, and weighed approximately 325 tons.
