The 1870 Point Reyes Lighthouse was built nearly 300 feet below the cliff top to be visible under the thick fog that often blankets the coast. For visitors, the walk may be breathtaking, but such beauty was little consolation to keepers who trudged the 308 stairs nightly to tend the light.
