| The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, completed in 1936, signalled the end of the ferry boats which were then the only means of travel between the two cities. It is actually two bridges totalling 8 1/2 miles in length: the suspension section from San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island and the cantilever section from there to Oakland. |
