Additional Details:
Lee Vining Canyon was named for Leroy Vining who had a sawmill here in 1863 to supply lumber to the mining camp of Aurora. Leroy had led a party of miners here the year before but found little gold. This is part of the Tioga Pass, the highest pass in California (9941 ft.) There are a number of lakes at the top of the pass. Tioga is an Iroquois Indian name, meaning "Where it forks," applied to towns and rivers in Pennsylvania and New York. Eastern mine owners transferred a name they were familiar with and named their new mines, pass and lake, Tioga.
