View of the West Portal of the Hoosac Tunnel, featuring the tunnel entrance with railroad tracks and a small building. The tunnel was commenced in 1851 and completed in 1875. At the time, it was considered the longest tunnel in the United States, involved the excavation of 1,900,000 tons of rock, employed about 900 men during construction with 195 lives lost, and measures 24 feet in height and 20 feet in width. It was equipped with electrical service in 1911. |
