The 13th-century church and the calvary, a Roman milestone surmounted by a cross. On the night of June 6, 1944, American paratrooper John Steele remained suspended from the belfry (as represented here during a commemoration). In the square, around the church, the battle raged and a bullet hit his foot. He played dead and was detached by German soldier Rudolf May. John Steele, after returning many times to Sainte-Mère-Église, died on May 16, 1969.
