The Masonic Temple is one of the oldest Masonic Lodge halls still in use, housing St. John's Lodge, No. 3, A. F. & A. M., chartered in 1772. It has been honored by Presidents Washington and Monroe. The Masonic Theatre on the first floor is the oldest theatre still operating in the United States, in use since 1804. The rear of the building was the site of the famed duel between Governor Spaight and John Stanly in 1802, where Spaight was killed. |
