The U.S. Army Explorer I was launched into orbit on January 31, 1958, from Cape Canaveral Missile Test Center. A modified Army Jupiter-C missile carried the 30.8 pound, 80-inch long Explorer satellite, the Free World's first, into an 18,000-mile-an-hour orbit to provide data for the 1958 International Geophysical Year research. This is No. 23 in the 1959 'Defenders of America' series from Nabisco. |
