The present structure, erected in 1884, is the second or third Lutheran church building on or near this site. Indications are that the first church building was erected before the town was laid out by Jacob Miller in 1761. For a time the congregation was served by Rev. Peter Muhlenberg, the preacher-patriot, immortalized by Buchanan Read. It was in Woodstock on a Sunday in January, 1776 that Muhlenberg, after preaching a stirring patriotic sermon, threw aside his clerical robe, revealing the garb of a Continental colonel, and declared that the time to fight had come. |
