This handsome house of native limestone is one of the best specimens of the antebellum country mansion in the entire Shenandoah Valley. It was built in 1773 by Gen. John Smith, who besides having fought in Dunmore's War with the Indians, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812, was a man of much local prominence in civil life. To him Samuel Kercheval dedicated his well known "History of the Valley of Virginia". "Hackwood" is two miles east of Winchester on Opequon battlefield, and during and after the battle fought here September 19, 1864, was used as a hospital. |
