The white slab in front of the old style coast defense gun marks the grave of Gen. Daniel Morgan, whose portrait is in insert. Morgan was born in New Jersey in 1736, but came to Berkeley County, Virginia, when a youth. He served in Braddock's campaign, Dunmore's war, and at the opening of the Revolution marched from Winchester to Boston with the first Virginia troops to join Washington. His regiment served with distinction at Quebec and Saratoga, and he was the victor and hero at Cowpens, S. C. He died in Winchester July 6, 1802. |
