The Virginia Woolen Company plant was the largest employer of labor in Winchester. Started in 1900 and enlarged in 1917, it operated 126 looms with 400 employees. Raw wool was purchased in Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago, and the finished bolted cloth was shipped to New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. The Ford Motor Company was a large patron, purchasing heavy cloth for car upholstery. |
