Additional Details:
View from Goat Island, photographed a few minutes before the bridge collapsed on January 27th, 1938. The collapse was caused by ice pressure against the abutments on the American end, when the river below the Falls was choked by the greatest ice jam in history. Built in 1898, the bridge had a length of 1240 feet and was 192 feet above the water. |
