In 1876, the town of Rockerville began to live with the discovery of gold in the Black Hills. It was one of the first, if not the first, placer mining camps in the area. By 1878 there were 2,000 residents in the area, and the town boasted banks, a newspaper, 7 saloons, stores, hotels and a Chinese laundry. |
