Jaguar Effigy, Milwaukee Public Museum
Additional Details:
| A "Cult of the Feline" was part of the earliest civilizations in both the Central Andes and Middle America. This hollow sheet-gold jaguar, about 11 cm. long, is of the earliest Mochica culture of Peru (400-100 B.C.). Fabricated of twelve shaped pieces soldered with silver alloys, it reflects sophisticated knowledge of metallurgy. Only five others made by a single craftsman are known to exist. |
