It is the second oldest lighthouse in the U.S. Built in 1856 by Lt. Gordon Meade, hero of the Battle of Gettysburg. When built the lighthouse was over a half mile from the Atlantic Ocean. Now the ocean is at its very footing. Decommissioned in 1929, it is now preserved as New Jersey's most historic landmark.
