THE SYNAGOGUE OF K.K. BETH ELOHIM
Charleston, South Carolina
Founded in 1749 by Jews who began to settle here late in the
1600's, the congregation was the birthplace of Reform Juda-
ism in America in 1824. The present temple was built in 1840
and is the oldest U.S. synagogue in continuous use. The con-
gregation has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
