BARSTOW, CALIFORNIA
Barstow is located at the junction of highways 99, 466 and
91, along the bank of the Mojave River. It was here that the
overland wagon trains once outfitted for points like Death
Valley and other frontier desert points. Barstow was the center
of gold and silver mining in the 1800's and early 1900's
when mining was carried on. With the drop in the price of
ore mining has given way to other incomes. Some of the mines
have never been worked out and hold as rich an ore as in
days gone past. There is some farming near Barstow; a
Marine Supply Depot; Santa Fe shops and a brisk tourist trade
