| Down by the river the canyon walls are composed of black gneiss, slates and schists, traversed by dikes of granite. Then there are 800 feet of quartzites, then 500 feet of greenish sandstone, then 700 feet called alcove limestone, above which is 1,600 feet of limestone, known as redwall limestone, then 800 feet of banded sandstone and at the top 1,000 feet of Aubrey sandstone. These are the elements with which the walls are constructed, from black buttress below to alabaster tower above. |
