| U.S.S. FORT MARION (LSD-22). A Landing Ship Dock named after a famous fortification which was built by the Spanish in 1672 at St. Augustine, Florida. USS FORT MARION was built by the Gulf Shipbuilding Corp. at Chickasaw, Alabama and commissioned in 1946. The ship's primary mission is to transport combat loaded boats, craft, vehicles and tanks for landing in early assault waves on enemy beachheads. |
