Apache Trail, Salt River Canyon
Additional Details:
| This route follows the Salt River through the mountains over a well maintained safe road that winds around caves and gorges. Apache once roamed the region. There are a number of dams in Salt River Canyon with Roosevelt being the largest and form sixty miles of lakes. Much of this road was built by Apache who were so reliable that they did not need overseers or timekeepers. Canyon Lake was formed when Mormon Flat Dam was built in 1925 at a cost of $1,559,000. Weaver's Needle may be seen in the Superstition Mountains from the end of the trail near Apache Junction. |
