BALBOA BAY FRONT
This ever popular vacation area overlooks the sail-dotted
lagoon-like bay. Along the shore are clustered many fine
homes and pleasure craft. This bay was once popular with
Yankee smugglers, and was an important commercial port
from 1872 to 1898. The Santa Ana River carried large quan-
tities of silt into the bay and by 1915 the river was diverted
to the ocean in another channel between Newport and
Huntington Beach. Paddle Boards float along the shore on
which brown kids are seen swimming and paddling on the
blue bay... M.P.
