Additional Details:
Founded in 1651 by Peter Stuyvesant, New Castle was first called Fort Cosimis. The Dutch had command of all traffic on the Delaware River. In 1664, when the English seized all Dutch possessions in North America, the name was changed to New Castle. In 1704, it became the colonial capital and later, the first state capital of Delaware.
