Additional Details:
| Formerly "Idle Hour," William K. Vanderbilt's summer home, the 110 room mansion on the Connetquot River is today the home of Dowling College, a private 4-year, accredited liberal arts college. This is a view of The Carriage House, which was first mentioned in the New York Times account of the wedding of Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt's sister, Mary. The House included an indoor ring for riding, a stable for 100 horses, and an elaborately decorated room for Mr. Vanderbilt. Today, it houses a gymnasium, art studios, classrooms and the Loft Theatre. |
