ft. Tail height, 39 ft. Length, 145 ft. Speed,
550 mph. Military payload, approximately 70,000
lbs. This giant fanjet will deliver Army airborne
men and equipment directly from the U. S. across
any ocean nonstop. Designed and manufactured
by Lockheed-Georgia Company, Marietta, Ga., a
division of Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. Fanjet
engines, Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford, Conn.
Development directed by Air Force Systems Com-
mand's Aeronautical Systems Division. Began
operations with Military Airlift Command, 1965.
First missions: airlifting troops, supplies and
equipment to Vietnam and returning wounded.
Certificated by Federal Aviation Agency as com-
mercial freighter, 1965.
