Built of solid stone in 1587 by Philip II of Spain, of
whom it was said "the Sun never sets on his dominions,
this fortress in 1762 gloriously defended Havana, when the
English attacked it by land. In 1844, the Tower was built
for a lighthouse. No longer needed as a fortress, the Morro
Castle is now used as a Military Academy.
