KENSINGTON RUNESTONE
This stone was found in the year 1898 in
Douglas County, Minnesota, under the roots
of a poplar tree about five inches in
diameter. The inscription is in runic
characters and the following is a literal
translation:
(Front of Stone)
8 Goths (Swedes) and 22 Norwegians
on exploration-journey from Vinland over
the West. We had camp by 2 skerries
(rocky islands) one "day's journey" north
from this stone. We were and fished one
day. When we returned home found 10
men red with blood and dead (scalped).
Ave Maria! Save us from evil!
(Side of Stone)
Have 10 men by the sea looking after our
ships, 14 "day's journey" from this island,
year 1362.
