This portrait of Marcus Whitman, the first American doctor
to practice medicine west of the Rocky Mountains, 1835-
1847, was painted by Ernest Ralph Norling of Los Angeles.
It was presented to Whitman College on August 13, 1936.
by the American Medical Association. The gift was made
possible by the contributions of members of the American
Medical Association living in the Pacific Northwest.
