The new, 550-bed, 10-story Letterman General
Hospital, is the realization of a dream for the
Army Medical Service. Ground was broken to begin
construction on Dec. 15, 1965, and the completed
building was dedicated on St. Valentine's Day,
February 14, 1969. Patients from the old Letterman
complex, which dates back to 1898, were moved
into the new hospital within a matter of weeks
after dedication.
The ultra-modern facility features overhead tele-
vision with remote controls for all patients; color
TV and continuous music in the solariums, and
two-way communicating systems which permit the
nurse to ascertain any patient's needs without
leaving her station.
From the solariums on the upper floors can be
seen the most spectacular view of San Francisco,
the Bay, and the Golden Gate Bridge to be found
anywhere in the Bay Area.
