Historical Note: A.A. Hyde was a Wichita industrialist who is best
remembered for combining menthol and petroleum jelly and thus,
creating Mentholatum ointment. At this building on the northeast corner of
Cleveland and Douglas, the product called the "Little Nurse for Little Ills"
was manufactured until about 1942, when the company moved to Buffalo,
New York. Fortunately, this landmark still stands and is now the home of
"The Spice Merchant," a local favorite for soup and sandwiches and an
incredible array of spices.
