Shortly before noon on Oct. 23, 1970,
Oct. 23, 1970, The Blue
Flame, the natural gas industry's rocket propelled
vehicle, set a world land speed record by traveling
across the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, at 622.407
m.p.h. The vehicle was driven during its record
setting run by 30-year-old Gary Gabelich of Long
Beach, Calif.
