Kentucky's First House, Walker State Park
Additional Details:
Story of Kentucky's First House: In 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker and associates explored Kentucky. They traveled through the Appalachian Mountains, crossed the Cumberland River, and built a small house on April 23rd. The house was 8 feet wide and 12 feet long. They planted corn and peach stones. They killed many bears and cured the meat. On April 30th, they left for further exploration. They returned to their starting point on July 13th. During their journey, they killed 13 buffalo, 8 elk, 53 bears, 20 deer, 4 wild geese, and about 150 wild turkeys, besides other small game. Dr. Walker's journal verifies the story. |
