A moonbow, also known as a lunar rainbow, is an optical phenomenon that occurs when moonlight is refracted through water droplets in the air. Like a rainbow, a moonbow is formed when light is refracted and reflected inside water droplets. However, unlike rainbows, which are caused by sunlight, moonbows are caused by moonlight. Moonbows are much fainter than rainbows because moonlight is much less intense than sunlight. They are often difficult to see with the naked eye, and they may appear white or colorless. However, long-exposure photographs can reveal the colors of a moonbow. |
