Dug to a depth of 27 feet by slave labor in 1860, the well is lined with circular brick used in that day. The well supplied citizens of this early day Texas town on the King's Highway with water for drinking, cooking and fighting fires. R. N. Stripling, a druggist in San Augustine for 60 years, restored the old well in 1963, when he cut a hole in the lobby of his store over the old well. |
