Additional Details:
The pony express service, carrying mail between St. Joseph, Missouri and the Pacific Coast was started April 3, 1860...Harassed by hostile Indians, often obliged to "carry on" over several links of the route when their relief riders were killed, relays of these fearless riders traversed the trackless plains from western railhead to the coast in about ten and one half days...The service was short lived being supplanted by the transcontinental, telegraph in 1861, but its story remains one of the inspiring chapters in the historical background of the words "The mail must go through!"
